ASSISTANCE & PLANNING
The average herd size
of a Marathon County dairy farm in 2002 was 67 cows and is anticipated
to climb to 100 by approximately 2007. Most of these 900 farms
are still operating in relatively labor intensive tie/stanchion
stall barns. As these farms decide how they can change and grow,
they need information and education on the options available to
modernize. For some, the decision might be making no changes,
but for others changing and possibly growing their businesses
may be a way for them to increase their profitability, increase
jobs and boost economic activity. Changes may include how they
milk, house, feed and handle manure with the latest available
technology and systems.
