NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT
Managing nutrient applications to maximize
profitability and minimize water degradation is
a smart move and a nutrient management plan
is a great way to do it. A nutrient management
plan is an annual plan updated to follow
USDA Natural Resources Conservation
Service’s 590 Nutrient Management Standard,
(2005). A plan accounts for all nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N-P-K)
nutrients applied to each field and is the
for each field. Soils need to be tested by a
DATCP certified laboratory every 4 years,
with each field sampled approximately every 5
acres.
NRCS 590 NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT STANDARD
Changes to Wisconsin Administrative Code, ATCP 50, went into
effect June 1, 2007 to implement the USDA Natural Resources
Conservation Service’s phosphorus based 590 Nutrient
Management Standard, (2005). As of January 1, 2008 law states that all farms applying nutrient need to implement a qualified nutrient management plan. In addition, a nutrient management plan can be
required when
producers:
- Are offered or accept cost-share dollars for nutrient management;
- Accept cost-share for installing manure storage;
- Participate in the farmland preservation program;
- Are regulated under a DNR WPDES permit, mostly farms
over 1,000 animal units;
- Are regulated under a county manure storage or livestock
siting ordinance.

NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT EDUCATION
2010 Nutrient Management Classes
Educators and conservation officials in a 5-county area are once again working together to offer Nutrient Management education at various locations in north central Wisconsin. Last year’s training series included 90 producers in Marathon, Lincoln, Clark, Taylor, and Price Counties. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP)-approved Nutrient Management Training Series is for livestock and crop producers interested in developing their first qualified Nutrient Management Plan (qNMP) or as a refresher to maintain “qualified planner” status.
DATCP-approved classes to develop qNMPs will be offered in Abbotsford, Spencer, Thorp, Medford, and Wausau in January and February, 2010. The class will cover plan development and implementation, using SNAP-Plus computer software or a manual option. Upon completion of the class, producers will have a qualified plan that meets state requirements, as well as available cost-share opportunities. The cost of the program is $130 per farm. The class fee will be reimbursed to registered students that complete the training and file a qNMP.
For more information on the program, contact Kirk Langfoss, Marathon County Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Department at (715) 261-2008, Mike Wildeck, Marathon County UW-Extension at (715) 261-1239, or Melissa Klein, NTC Ag Coordinator at (715) 803-1671. This program is provided by the County Conservation Departments, UW-Extension, and Northcentral Technical College offices in Marathon, Clark, Lincoln, Taylor, and Price Counties.
