The Neighbor’s Place Community Garden -
Falcon Drive,
Wausau, WI
The Neighbors' Place Community Garden consists of 12 acres of land, donated by 3M, which is divided into 40' X 40' plots. Approximately 225 families benefit from the generosity of this land donation and program. Each family plants vegetable seeds of their choice, maintains the success of the garden, and harvests the crops for their own consumption.
Ten percent of each family's harvest is returned to the community. Gene Jacobson, garden coordinator, weighs the produce, turned in by each family, and collects it for distribution. Four out of five days, The Neighbors' Place receives produce for their food pantry which is open to everyone in need. On Fridays Gene delivers fresh produce to The Salvation Army for their daily dinners. In addition the Boys & Girls Clubs, of Wausau, receive produce for their Summer Lunch Program.
Many of these experienced gardeners are Hmong. You will have a chance to visit with them and you’ll see many unusual vegetables growing here. When you enter the gated area you’ll feel like you’ve entered another culture.
The Neighbor’s Place is part of the American Community Gardening Association (ACGA) which recognizes that community gardening improves people's quality of life by providing a catalyst for neighborhood and community development, encouraging self-reliance, beautifying neighborhoods, producing nutritious food, reducing family food budgets, conserving resources and creating opportunities for social interaction, recreation, exercise, and education.
