2009 Outstanding Young Farmer & Century Farmer Applications Available
Each year the Marathon County Agricultural Society coordinated jointly by the UW-Extension and the Partnership for Progressive Agriculture, recognizes the efforts of local farm producers. The Century Farm Awards program recognizes those who have maintained farm ownership for 100 years or more. The Outstanding Young Farmer Award recognizes achievements in farming career, community, and conservation. Awardees will be recognized at the Annual Farm City Dinner, Wausau on March 6, 2009. Wisconsin Farm Technology Days — Host Farm Announced
Wisconsin's largest outdoor agriculture show will be hosted by Marathon County in 2011. At a media conference held on November 11th, Keith Langenhahn, FTD Executive Committee Chairman introduced Ken and Karen Seehafer of Seehafer Acres, Inc., as the host farm of the 2011 event. Are High Energy Cost Getting You Down?
The Home Energy Plus Program may help. Energy Services for Marathon County offers grants for low income individuals and families. Grants are determined by energy costs, household size, income, property type, etc. You may also qualify for free home weatherization. For more information call Energy Services, Inc at (715) 842-3111. Emerald Ash Borer Now Confirmed in Wisconsin
Foresters, arborists, and horticulturists are preparing for a potentially devastating attack of the Emerald Ash Borer. This insect has killed millions trees in the nearby states of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, and was most recently confirmed in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. The Switch to Digital Television is Coming
Are you ready? Television broadcasting is moving from an old standard – known as “analog” – to a new standard called Digital TV. After February 17, 2009, all television broadcasts will be exclusively digital, most including Wisconsin Public Television have already began to offer digital programming. Viewers who have cable or satellite shouldn't have to upgrade. Digital TV provides crystal clear pictures and sound and more programming choices. Marathon County Land Atlas & Plat Books are available at the UW-Extension Office and several other county locations. Platbooks are a convenient reference for local governments, businesses, and the general public. Proceeds go to Marathon County 4-H Leaders Federation to help fund various 4-H programs. 4-H Community Clubs
4-H provides real-life experiences for youth through practical, learn-by-doing educational programs. It is for all youth in grades K-13 (one year out of high school). Wherever you live, rural or city, 4-H has something for you. 4-H activities help youth develop self-esteem, become responsible young adults, gain a sense of belonging and improve decision-making, communication and leadership skills.
