WHAT IS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT?
One can define ‘youth development’ as:
'the ongoing growth process in which all youth are engaged in attempting to (1) meet their basic personal and social needs to be safe, feel cared for, be valued, be useful, and be spiritually grounded, and (2) to build skills and competencies that allow them to function and contribute in their daily lives."
(Pittman, 1993, p. 8)
This definition accurately describes youth development as a process that young people go through on the way to being an adult. As the definition implies that the journey should automatically involve the entire community as supporters of the youth. The Administration for Children and Famiilies states that when young people are nurtured by caring adults, are given opportunities to develop skills and are activily engaged in community activities, they become valuable contributors to the quality of community life. The 2002 National 4-H Conversation results support broad based community efforts to address youth issues. the five top initiatives for the Conversation include: 1) Establish safe places and environments for youth to convene and have positive learning and socializing experiences, 2) Increase the visibility of positive youth development experiences so that such opportunities continue to grow, 3) Promote positive youth activities and learning experiences, 4) Encourage parents to increase their involvement with their youth and 5) Ensure access to youth programs and educational opportunities for all youth, building respect, and tolerance. As the Youth Development Educator my role is to provide Milwaukee County residence with research-based features that support positive youth development as it pretain to efficacy, resilence and education and life skills in order to provide opportinities for skill building, integration of parent/family, school and community efforts.
