No Smoking Kickin' Butts in Oconto County

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

On August 1, 2002 a group of teenagers in Oconto County went into businesses and convenience stores and did a survey on tobacco advertisement.  They went to a total of seven different businesses in Oconto and Abrams.  This group included Courtney Bohlman, Kristen DelMarcelle, Amber Bohlman, Sara Applebee and Lisa Devine-Barribeau.

The Facts:

  • One store refused to be surveyed.

  • There was a total of 62 ads in and around all the stores.  This was the first year that Abrams businesses were surveyed and they had an average of 14.5 ads per store.  This was the third year for Oconto businesses to be surveyed and they found  an average of 6 ads per store.  This was an improvement compared to the previous two years.  Last year they found an average of 6.5 and the year before 17 ads per store.

  • There were no ads by or above candy.  Most of the ads were not lower than three feet where the younger kids would see them.

  • Almost half of advertising is done by Marlboro (17) and Camel (13), which are the most popular brands for teens.

  • Almost all stores had "We Card" posters on the doors and counters.

  • Two convenience stores showed proof that they had passed previous compliance checks, which means they did not sell tobacco products illegally to underage youth.

  • One store owner admitted receiving $100-200 for allowing tobacco ads in their store.

  • Most ads were by or around the counter.

  • Each tobacco company is responsible for advertising their own promotional displays.

  • While doing checks, they met up with a tobacco advertising rep who commented on their survey by saying "MORE ADS ARE BETTER!"
