North Central Wisconsin Farm to Fork - A “Get Acquainted” event for Buyers and Sellers of Local Food

Contact:Jane Hansen, Price County UW-Extension 715/339-2555, jane.hansen@ces.uwex.edu

PHILLIPS – An event to bring together food buying businesses and local and regional food producers is planned for April 13, 2009 from 5-7pm. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to come to the Price County UW-Extension office at 104 S. Eyder Avenue in Phillips. The office is 3 blocks west of Hwy 13 on Chestnut Street. Buyers and sellers large and small will be in attendance.

Jane Hansen, Marketing Specialist with Price County UW-Extension for the PriceDirect Local Food Initiative notes that “As of today, we have representatives from the following businesses and organizations planning to attend this event: Flambeau Hospital, MC Design Catering, Back to Basics, Phillips Farmers Market, Davis Dairy Store, Fifield Grocery, The Cabin at Connors Lake, Winter Co-op, Northwoods Supper Club and Prentice Country Store. We’re certain to also have many other market opportunities represented at the event.

Potential buyers of local food are invited to staff a table and be available to talk about what kinds of local foods their business is looking for. Local producers and growers will circulate among the tables to learn what the buyers needs are. This will be a great chance to meet local producers and to learn about what is available and when. Buyers should bring menus, business cards, purchasing lists, ordering schedules or anything else that will help facilitate their interactions with the growers. Producers should bring pricing and availability lists, business cards, food samples, pictures of their farm, etc.

We will have a resource table at the event with staff from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection and UW-Extension. These staff members will be available to answer any questions you may have about using locally produced foods in your business.

This event is part of an effort called Nourishing Northern Wisconsin which brings together a large group of organizations and initiatives to develop and strengthen local food systems in Northern Wisconsin. These organizations include PriceDirect Local Food Initiative here in Price County, Northwest Wisconsin Regional Food Network based in Rice Lake and a variety of partners in a 12 county region in Northwestern and North Central Wisconsin.

Governor Doyle awarded the group a “Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin” grant in 2008. Governor Doyle’s Buy Local Buy Wisconsin grant allows the Nourishing Northern Wisconsin project to develop cooperative business models to efficiently aggregate, market and distribute local foods. The grant also allows the group to provide education and outreach to consumers and producers with the goal of expanding the local food markets in Northern Wisconsin.

For more information about Buy Local Buy Wisconsin, go to www.datcp.state.wi.us and search for “buy local.” For more information about the April 13th Farm to Fork event, go to http://www.uwex.edu/ces/cty/price/. Everyone planning to attend should RSVP before Wednesday, April 8, 2009.
