The Sawyer County Healthy Lifestyles Coalition ( formerly Sawyer County Nutrition Task Force) is a community coalition that promotes hunger awareness and focuses as well, on issues of access to healthy food and physical activity and building systems to take control over these issues.

Food Insecurity Issues in Sawyer County:

In the fall of 2004 a survey of families in the Hayward School district was conducted in grades K-5, by the University of Wisconsin Extension Nutrition Program. Our goal was to find out just what factors may be involved with families who have difficulty feeding their families and also, what services they currently use. The surveys were anonymous. In 2005, surveys were completed for Stone Lake, Winter and St Francis schools.

Priority Area #1: Decrease the Rate of Childhood Obesity (definition)

Years 1&2 Objective: Increase Community Awareness of Childhood Obesity.

Years 3&4 Objective: Increase availability of nutritional options in vending machines.

Years 5&6 Objective: Increase the community awareness of healthy choices available at local restaurants

Priority Area #2: Increase Food Security ( definition)

Years 1 & 2 Objective: Increase the availability of healthier food options for people in Sawyer County.

Years 3&4 Objective: Increase the amount of people in Sawyer County receiving financial budgeting services.

Years 5&6 Objective: Build community wide partnerships to continue Food Security Efforts

Priority Area #3: Community Nutrition Assessment ( definition)

Years 1&2 Objective: Conduct assessment of available nutritional assessment documents.

Years 3&4 Objective: Conduct assessment of community healthcare providers referral and counseling services for nutrition and physical activity.
