The mission of the UW-Extension Community Resource Development Educator
is to help citizens build better communities, by:
- providing learning opportunities related to public issues
- facilitating citizen participation
- conducting localized research with community groups
- accessing outside resources and university information
The benefits of this work for communities include...
- greater public awareness of current forces affecting communities
- more informed group and community decision making
- preservation of community features that citizens value
- progress toward changes that citizens desire

- property owners, lake groups and natural resource organizations

The Shawano County UW-Extension program partners with the county's development corporations, chambers
of commerce, downtown and tourism groups, and other nonprofits
to help build their own capacities for making development happen.
We support them by conducting research on special topics , facilitating strategic
plan events, and providing development related information & education.

Change always gives rise to both risks and opportunities. Large corporations and the world’s governments are beginning to work out a response to the twin challenges of the sunset of fossil fuels, and climate change. What new methods and processes are being developed? How does all this effect management decision making and business planning? How can you use the changes to cut costs, and find new profit opportunities? What does this have to do with your business?

An Introduction to Carbon Strategy July 20, 2007. 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Shawano County Board room. Planning, decision making and management in what Wall Street calls, “a carbon constrained economy”. Presentations will be by streaming video from the Fall 2006 UW international conference for executives, and by Jay Moynihan, UW-Extension Shawano County.
An Introduction to Green Building August 10, 2007. 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Shawano County Board room. Smarter building for the long haul. Our presenter is Sherrie Gruder, Sustainable Design Specialist, and a LEED Accredited Professional, with the SHWEC office of UW-Extension. Gruder is a national expert on the LEED green building rating system and component approaches, deconstruction and construction materials reuse and recycling planning, green products procurement and integrated energy opportunities.
Business & Sustainability September 14, 2007. 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Shawano County Board room. Energy Efficiency is the “new” term that combines the traditional concept of conservation, and application of new technologies. Energy use is not just fuel and power. It is a part of all activities, processes, and products. Waste and pollution are inefficiency. Learn about the emerging context of sustainability for business. Presenter will include: Thomas Eggert, from the Wisconsin DNR’s Green Tier program for advanced businesses. Paul Linzmeyer, a member of the Board of New North, and president of Bay Towel, Inc.
An Introduction to Bio-fuels, and the Bio-fuels Business October 12, 2007. 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Shawano County Board room. The buzz is bio-fuels. But what exactly are they, how are they made, and what are the business risks and opportunities? The presenter is Patrick Walsh, who has graduate degrees in both engineering and law. Dr. Walsh is departmental chair, and professor of Biological Systems Engineering at UW-Madison.
Industrial Ecology and Manufacturing November 2, 2007. 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Shawano County Court House room 4a and 4b. Waste is inefficiency in a process. It costs money. This workshop explores the new industrial model of cyclic, and closed loop manufacturing. Presenters are: Jerry Hembd is the director of the Northern Center for Community and Economic Development. An economist and economic development specialist, Hembd has been instrumental in the new private-public partnership for industrial ecology in the Duluth-Superior region. Jay Moynihan UW-Extension Shawano will cover the conceptual introduction to the topic.
