Cooler temperatures the past week have slowed development and maturity. Evaluate alfalfa fields on a field-by-field basis. It looks like harvest the end of this week, May 25, 26, 27, will be optimal for high quality forage in most areas of Sheboygan, Ozaukee, and Washington Counties. Cooler temperatures near the lake delay growth.
Scissor cut RFVs and PEAQ RFVs are about 15 RFV points higher than forage coming out of storage. On average we lose roughly 3-4 RFV points per day. This will be the last Alfalfa Quality Report sent along this year.
For more information contact Mike Ballweg at (920) 467-5757.

With warm April temperatures, alfalfa crop development is running ahead of recent years. Fields sampled are 2nd production year fields. Evaluate fields on a field-by-field basis. There are growth differences as a result of soil fertility, variety, the previous year's fall management, and age of stand. Look for opportunities to begin harvesting the week of May 22 for high quality forage. Scissor cut RFVs and PEAQ RFVs are about 15 RFV points higher than forage coming out of storage. On average we lose roughly 3-4 RFV points per day.
Scissor cutting and PEAQ measures will be taken again on May 22nd. Future results will be posted on our website at: http://sheboygan.uwex.edu. Click on: Agronomy/Forage, or for more information contact Mike Ballweg at (920) 467-5757.
