4-H ProjectsINFORMATION FOR PARENTS

How will 4-H Benefit Your Children?

When a youngster joins 4-H, they meet new friends, learn new skills and begin to develop their leadership abilities. They also have fun and can earn recognition and awards.

The goal of the 4-H Club program is youth development. 4-H uses projects and activities that youth enjoy as the tools to accomplish the overall goal of helping them to become competent, capable young adults. A major part of developing youth is for 4-H members to acquire and practice those skills that they will need to be successful adults. These are called "Life Skills." They include learning to:

  • Develop an inquiring mind and desire to learn
  • Make decisions and solve problems
  • Relate to others, including younger and older peers as well as adults
  • Develop a concern for their community and neighbors
  • Build their self-confidence
  • Increase their communication skills

The Role of Parents in 4-H

Parental support is a very important key to the success a child will have in the 4-H program. Parents are encouraged to attend monthly meetings with their child and become involved as a family in attending and taking part in 4-H activities and events.

The parents' key role is to support their child in selecting projects to take, choosing activities to participate and to help the youngster think through decisions and take responsibility for their decisions.

There are several ways for parents to help:

  • Attend 4-H meetings and events with their children
  • Supervise your child's project work but don't do the work for them
  • Support your local 4-H club by offering your help to the leader in charge
  • Keep up to date on current 4-H Happenings by reading the 4-H newsletter
  • Encourage your child to participate in a variety of 4-H county activities
  • Be a role model. Set a good example for your children and others to follow
  • And maybe the most important. . .be there when your child needs your help, support or friendship.
