Who We Are
Washington County Association
for Home and Community Education (HCE) is a not for profit volunteer
organization working locally with the Wisconsin Bookworms project. Our
organization is affiliated with the Wisconsin Association for
Home and Community Education, Country Women's Council, and internationally
with the Associated Country Women of the World.
Wisconsin Bookworms Project
Our members work with
Wisconsin Public Television and UW-Extension Family Living Programs
to provide books free of charge to children from families with
limited resources who might otherwise not have a chance to cherish
a book of their own. Volunteer mentors meet with the children
8 times a year, read a book to them, and then give them the book
and an activity sheet to share with their family.
The project
is a tremendous success!
What We Are Doing
Washington County has 265 children enrolled in the various Head
Start and elementary educational needs programs this year.
Seven HCE members along with several other volunteers to read to the children. This is
all made possible through an award from UW Extension of Washington
County.
Our Goals
Because of the enthusiastic response that the Wisconsin Bookworms project
received from the volunteer mentors, children, parents and teachers,
we feel every effort should be made to continue this activity.
Washington County HCE is reaching out to Washington County families
and children and letting books be the bridge to encourage preschool
children to read and have a life-long love of learning
