Let's
Try New Foods!
As a parent, you are your
child's first role model.
By encouraging good feelings
about trying new foods, you can help your child develop a lif
etime of healthful eating.
An EEO/Affirmative Action
Employer, University of Wisconsin-Extension provides equal opportunities
in employment and programming, including Title IX and ADA requirements.
Enjoy
New Foods Together
As your child learns
to try and enjoy new foods, they will have more foods to choose
from for a healthy diet. Different foods promote growth and good
health in different ways.
Enjoying a variety of
foods makes eating more fun. To encourage your child to eat a
variety of foods: look at, compare, and talk about new foods with
your child. Some tips for trying new foods
- Offer new foods
first - Kids are more willing to try new foods when
they are hungry.
- Let your child
choose - If your child is with you at the store, let
him/her pick a new fruit or vegetable to try.
- Do a taste test
- Talk about a new food. Have your child describe the
color, shape, texture, smell, and taste of a new food.
- Encourage at
least one bite - Keep food tasting positive and try
not to put pressure on your child to try new foods.
- Model tasting
new foods - Kids copy what they see their parents do
so try new foods yourself. Keep quiet when having a food you
don't li ke.
- Serve new foods
in different ways - Your child may prefer picking up
a raw vegetable rather than eating it cooked.
- Offer new foods
often - Kids are cautious and may need to try a new
food 5 to 10 times before they decide they like it.
- Stay relaxed
- Kids may not like everything. You have food favorites,
too.
