PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH
Making Family Vacations Bearable
Does the thought of taking a family vacation make you eager
with anticipation, or does it make you cringe? With careful thought
and planning, family vacations can be enjoyable memories for
all family members. A few things parents should keep in mind:
- Older children will enjoy the trip more if they were involved
in planning.
- Limit the number of sites you plan to visit. And be willing
to forgo some of the planned activities if it seems to be necessary.
- Prepare bags of activities for each child. Include small
toys, puzzle books, travel games, and a favorite stuffed animal
to keep them occupied. Have a few of their favorite items secretly
packed away and distribute them throughout the trip.
- Dress in comfortable clothing. Remind everyone that they
must be buckled into their car seat or seatbelt at all times
while riding in the car.
- Stop at least every 2 hours to give children time to use
up their energy.
- Catch your children being good and compliment them.
These tips should help reduce the number of sibling squabbles
and also spread out the amount of time between the common question, “Are
we there yet?
