HOME
& COMMUNITY EDUCATION (HCE) - Wisconsin Bookworms™
The Winnebago County Association for Home and Community Education
(HCE) has implemented the Wisconsin Bookworms™ Club project in partnership
with the Winnebago County Head Start Program.
This project provides volunteers to read and provide books and
book bags free of charge to children enrolled in Head Start.
Wisconsin Bookworms™
The Wisconsin Bookworms™ Project is part of the Ready to Learn component
of Wisconsin Public Television. It began in 1998 with a special
one-time innovative grant from the UW Extension Vice Chancellor's
office. Our members work with Wisconsin Public Television and
UW Extension Family Living Program to provide books free of
charge to children who might otherwise not have a chance to
cherish a book of their own. Volunteer mentors meet with the
children times during the school year to read and do related
activities with them. The book and activity worksheet are then
given to the children for sharing with their family. "Fantastic" and "Wonderful" are
how Head Start professionals have described the Wisconsin Bookworms™
project.
Who We Are
Winnebago County Association for Home and Community Education
(HCE) is a not for profit volunteer organization working
locally with the Wisconsin Bookworms™ project. Our organization is
affiliated
with the Wisconsin Association for Home and Community Education,
Country Women's Council, and internationally with the Associated
Country Women of the World.
What We Are Doing
Because of the enthusiastic response that
the Wisconsin Bookworms™ project received from the volunteer mentors,
children, parents and
teachers, we feel every effort should be made to continue
and expand this activity each year. For the 2005-2006 school
year,
Winnebago County HCE reached out to 68 county children
and their families by letting books be the bridge that encourage
preschool children to read and have a life long love of learning.
Our
Goals
Ultimately we hope to make Wisconsin Bookworms™ available to
all Winnebago County Head Start children as other neighboring
counties have
done. Winnebago County HCE is serving 85 Head Start Children
in the 2006-2007 school year. In pursuit of our goal, Winnebago
County HCE needs $25.00 per child to provide books for these
children. A $25.00 donation will provide nine books and activity
sheets for one child.
