Eastern District Profile

The Faculty and Staff of the University of Wisconsin-Extension's Eastern District extend the knowledge and resources of the University of Wisconsin to people where they live and work in Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Oconto, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Washington and Winnebago Counties.

Throughout the Eastern District there are 98 faculty and academic staff, jointly employed by the county and UW-Extension. Our core program areas include 4-H and Youth Development; Family Living; Community, Natural Resource and Economic Development; and Agriculture and Natural Resources. Faculty and staff work in county courthouses and other government centers including the UW Fond du Lac Campus, UW Green Bay Campus, the DNR Office in Peshtigo, and the Kewaunee Land Conservation Center .

Eastern Wisconsin has experienced tremendous growth, predominately in Green Bay and the Fox Valley corridor. This growth affected tremendous change in the environment and culture of the district. The district's population of almost 1,205,000 has been predominately composed of communities with descendants of northern European ancestry. In recent years, immigrants and refugees have relocated to the area changing the demographics. The growth in Hispanic and Southeast Asian populations appear to be tied to the job market. Brown County experienced the largest growth of Hispanic populations in the state. Green Bay ( Brown County ) and Appleton (Outagamie, Calumet and Winnebago Counties ) are among the ten largest cities in the state.

To address the needs of this growing urban center, UWEX has supported an Urban Initiative. Since 1997 colleagues in Brown, Outagamie, Winnebago and Fond du Lac Counties have been addressing the critical issues in their urban communities. As the population pushed into nearby areas, Calumet County became part of this effort.
