To minimize risk, trip leaders should follow these recommendations for county, regional and/or overnight bike adventures.

 

I. Pre - Day Trip Participant

A. BIKE MAINTENANCE CHECK

___ Tires are inflated properly

___ Chains clean & properly adjusted

___ All bolts & equipment secure

___ Seat adjusted to fit rider

 

B. RIDER ATTIRE

___ Approved bicycle helmet

___ Approved riding attire (no loose-fitting leg pants)

___ Water bottle(s)

___ Tight fitting day pack (optional)

 

C. GROUP LEADER (Pre-trip)

___ Bike Maintenance Check

___ Group Gear (Bike Maintenance Kit & First Aide Kit)

___ Helmet & Water Bottle(s)

___ Tight fitting daypack or panniers

 

 

II. Day Long Bike Trip Guidelines

 

A. PARTICIPANTS

___ Participant Heath & Permission form complete and signed

___ Participants gear is proper and checked

___ Participant orientation completed

 

B. TRIP SUPPORT

___ Transportation of personal gear/equipment for begin and end.

___ Map of designated route with identified rest stops

___ A plan for – “in case of emergencies”. (Accidents, inclement weather, etc)

___ A plan for disabled equipment or people.

___ Sag wagons (if appropriate)

 

C. SUPERVISION RATIOS

___ A minimum ratio of 1adult per 10 youth with minimum of 2 adults on trip

___ Additional adults for sag wagon(s).

 

D. TRIP ORIENTATION

___ Safety regulations are covered before the trip

___ Emergency procedures are covered such as accident

___ First aid procedures reviewed

___ Health and sanitation practices reviewed

___ Any practices to protect the environment

___ Rendezvous times and places reviewed

___ Specific information on how and where to obtain medical and emergency assistance on the trip.

 

E. TRIP STAFF TRAINING

___ Leader is able to assess safety concerns of participants

___ Leader can assess potential safety hazards of activity

___ Leader can enforce safety regulations

___ Leader can handle potential emergency situations.
