Aging and Family Caregiving

Aging, especially the education and support of family caregivers, was identified as a high priority in many Wisconsin counties by Family Living Educators in the 2008 county needs assessment process. To address this priority, the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Family Living Programs Aging Team, created a plan of action around their mission:

"To develop and disseminate research-based, educational programs to address the needs of Wisconsin's aging population and their families."

The team's plan focuses on providing education to family caregivers, creating an awareness of how an aging population impacts local communities and the need for older adults to be financially secure. They are working with national, state, and local partners to continue providing educational programs for family caregivers and to expand into financial management issues family caregivers need to address.

What is on this web site?

This site is designed to help professionals working with family caregivers find resource materials, research, and teaching resources for Extension supported curriculums. Family caregivers will also find the site helpful for locating caregiver resources that address everyday needs and concerns of caregiving.

What resources will I find here?

  • Caregiving Education for class leaders and master trainers, complete with ready-to-use marketing material and evaluations. A listing of current class leaders and master trainers by county is also available for the Extension support family caregiver curriculums.
  • Caregiving Collaborations, including listings by county of end-of-life coalitions, dementia networks and caregiver coalitions or alliances, along with tools for building, maintaining and evaluating collaborations;
  • Caregiving Resources, including a county-by-county report on Wisconsin caregiving demographics, caregiving fact sheets, newsletters and
  • Caregiving Research, featuring articles and research projects, including a UW-Milwaukee and UW-Extension effort called the League of Experienced Caregivers, with information on how family caregivers can get involved in research.

Wisconsin Alliance for Family Caregiving and Bethany, Inc.

For almost ten years, the UW-Extension has been a partner in the development and support of the Wisconsin Alliance for Family Caregivers (aka "the Alliance"). Since the Alliance is no longer operating as a stand-alone nonprofit, Bethany, Inc. has assumed most of its functions. Consequently, the website sponsored by Bethany, Inc. is in many ways similar to the one developed by the Alliance. Information designed to support family caregiving instructional programs (e.g. Powerful Tools for Caregivers), however, will continue to be available on the UW-Extension Family Caregiving website.
