Foreshadowing

Preschool

What We Saw: It was choice time. Children were engaged in various activities. A teacher came over to a child and said "Five more minutes before you need to brush your teeth." When it was time for the child to brush his teeth the teacher said to him, "We'll hold your spot." The child went to brush his teeth without any hesitation. When the child came back from brushing his teeth a teacher had insured that his spot at play was waiting for him. He happily re-entered the play situation.

What It Means: The teacher was using the technique of foreshadowing to facilitate a smooth transition between play and brushing teeth. By giving the child advanced warning that he would need to stop his play and go brush his teeth, the teacher was being respectful of the child's involvement in his play. She furthered his sense of security by saving his spot for him so he could be assured of continuing his play once he returned.
