Housing
Part 4: Housing Assistance Programs
In many places the housing market does not offer much housing affordable
to low income households. The federal government through public housing
authorities and other groups provides at least some decent subsidized
housing.

Presenters: John Merrill is a professor
in the School of Human Ecology at the UW-Madison and an extension housing
specialist.
Activity: Your assignment is to visit the
following web site: http://www.wheda.com/Reports/MF_AM_Fedhsglist.asp
This first page has definitions of the program abbreviations used in the
directory. For example LIPH is defined as “Low Income Public Housing”
Enter your county name in the Select County@ box. It will produce a table
of various federally assisted housing in your county. At the top right
of the table is a total of all units. The column to the immediate left
tells whether units are for families for elderly persons or for persons
with disabilities. As you move down into the chart it gives information
about each of the facilities in the county including the number of units
by category and funding program. In most counties at least one listing
will be for a housing authority.
Call one of
the housing authorities listed in the activity above and find the answers
to the following questions:
- Are any family housing units available?
- If so, how many bedrooms?
- Is there a waiting list, if so how many months wait do they estimate
if you were to apply?
- If they do not have any units available can they refer to another source
of housing assistance? If so write down the agency(ies) or company(ies)
to which they refer you.
