Wisconsin School Breakfast

School Breakfast Fundamentals

School Breakfast Delivery Models

There’s more than one way to serve breakfast! Schools across Wisconsin are serving breakfast in creative ways that meet the needs of their students and community. Below are some examples of alternate ways of serving breakfast in a convenient fact sheet.

Universal Breakfast

Breakfast is available to all students at no charge, regardless of their household income; however, the school claims the federal reimbursement at the correct income category for that student.

Breakfast in the Classroom

Just like the name implies, students eat breakfast in the classroom at the beginning of the day or during morning break time. Breakfast only takes 10-15 minutes for the students to eat and teachers use this time to take attendance, collect homework, deliver announcements or read to the class.

Mid-morning Nutrition Break

Students eat individually packaged reimbursable breakfasts during a break in the morning, usually between 9:00 am and 10:00 am. Breakfasts are typically offered from mobile carts or tables located in high traffic areas where there are many students.

Grab N’ Go/Breakfast in a Bag

Students pick up their breakfasts in pre-packaged Grab ‘n Go bags from either the cafeteria or conveniently located carts or tables. Students then can take their breakfast and eat it where they want – outside with friends, in the hallway, in the cafeteria or in class if permitted.

Breakfast Carts

Why not bring breakfast to the students? Breakfast carts serve hot or cold breakfasts to students outside of the cafeteria. Carts are normally positioned in high traffic areas for increased visibility.

Elimination of Reduced Price Breakfasts

Students who qualify for reduced price breakfasts are not charged the $.30 cost, although they are still only claimed at a reduced price rate. Offering breakfast to these students for free increases their participation.

Breakfast on the Bus

Students who have long bus rides into school can pick up and eat their breakfast on the bus. Breakfasts are packaged the night before in Grab n’ Go bags that are distributed to buses in the morning.

Creative Menu Ideas

These menu ideas respond to students’ changing tastes and needs. Examples include smoothies, yogurt parfaits and breakfast pizza.
