    General Health Insurance Coverage

The US Census Bureau has issued a national report on the number of insured. This report presents data on the health insurance coverage of people in the United States during the 1997 calendar year. The data, which are shown by selected demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, as well as by state, were collected by the March 1998 Supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS). An estimated 43.4 (+/-0.5) million people in the United States or 16.1 (+/-0.2) percent of the population were without health insurance coverage during the entire 1997 calendar year. This number was up 1.7 million from the previous year; statistically, the proportion was also higher than the previous year.
