Community health care needs assessments
Many Wisconsin counties are currently involved with, or have recently completed, a health care needs assessments. Most of these though initiated by the Wisconsin Bureau of Public Health, brought to the table a wide array of community leaders and representatives, including county Extension faculty. The basic purpose of a needs assessment is to document the needs of the community, the resources available to meet those needs, and to set some priorities of matching resources to needs. Needs assessment is part of the process of developing and sustaining health care delivery systems, particularly in rural communities where large market forces that sometimes serve this role in urban areas are not existent. Training materials are available for communities wishing to do assessment. Requests should be sent to Roberta Riportella-Muller, Dept. of Consumer Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1300 Linden Drive, Madison, WI 53706-1575 or rriporte@facstaff.wisc.edu.
