Internships in FLP: Many Choices
Where would you like to work?
Family Living Programs are happening in
every Wisconsin county so there are many offices in communities where an
internship could be arranged. Interns sometimes work in or near the same city in
which they are attending school. Others negotiate an internship in a distant
community.
State or community level?
At the community level interns have more of an
opportunity to work directly with individuals, families, and community
partners.
At the state level interns can be involved in research, materials
development, and statewide coordination of various efforts.This usually provides
more of an opportunity to develop technical skills in areas such as program
planning, materials development, evaluation, or delivery of information using
the web.
What areas of work are you interested in?
Family Living initiatives cover
a broad array of subjects. Here is a list of examples of areas we do work
in:
- Nutrition education for low resource audiences
- Parenting education and parenting support
- Family resource mangement
- Adolescent risk behavior education
- Child abuse prevention and home visitation
- Community family resource assessment and development
- Intergenerational programs
- 4H Youth Development (we refer).
- Family Impact Seminar (family policy education)
Pursuing an Internship With Us
If you are ready to pursue an internship with us, here are the steps:
Read the above information under Internships in FLP: Many Choices and
Send an email message to Ann Keim (FLP Internship
Coordinator, ann.keim@ces.uwex.edu)
that includes your answers to the following questions:
- What is your full name?
- In what campus and department are you a student?
- Gradutate or undergraduate program?
- What year in the program? (for example, Junior, Senior, 3rd year, etc)
- Where would you like to work? (counties or cities in Wisconsin)
- At the state or community level?
- What areas of work interest you?What time period are you hoping to intern
within?
- Approximate number of hours per week during this time period.
- Who is the professor that will oversee the internship from the campus?
- What background or experiences will you bring to the internship that will
help you to be successful?
- How can you be reached (phone number(s) or email address).
Then What?
When Ann receives your message, she will contact potential
internship hosts. Then she will contact you and provide you with information to
reach those persons that work in the appropriate geographical area(s), and which
are expert in the subject areas of your interest.
Prepare a resume and schedule an interview.
Once you have met with a host and have determined that the match will work
for both of you, an agreement or contract should be written that clarifies the
expectations of the student, the academic department, and the coordinator.
Usually the format of such is specified by the academic department of your
University. Please inform the host of any documentation or evaluation your
University requires.
