Why do we need to share?

Family Living colleagues indicated, in a 2001 survey conducted by the Department of Family Development, they felt they had moderate understanding of the concept of scholarship and moderate ability to apply scholarship concepts in their programming.

Colleagues overwhelmingly said they would value the opportunity to learn more about scholarship and to further develop skills in analyzing applications of scholarship in others' programming (ex. peer reviews). The most highly rated item from the survey was that colleagues would learn from presentations showing applications of scholarship.

It is within our responsibility as members of a profession to nurture the development of colleagues. Sharing these examples of scholarly work provides the opportunity to increase the understanding of the meaning of scholarship in our work among our entire program area.

It has been said that it is simply not enough "to do good work". We have to do work that is relevant, valued, solidly research-based, that makes a difference to those we serve. We already do scholarly work much of the time. We do it automatically. It is the original foundation of Extension work. What we must do now, in part through sharing, is learn to speak the "scholarship" language and apply those criteria to our work so that we have the highest quality of scholarship in our work whenever practical and possible.
