Highlights of Current Assignments and Programs
- Parenting the First Year is a 12-part series of age-paced,
instructional newsletters for new parents, available in both English and
Spanish. County Extension Agents coordinate over 70 local partnerships that
deliver the series for free to nearly half of Wisconsin's new parents each year
(about 30,000 households last year).
- Evidence of Impact: Parents who receive the newsletters,
compared to those who don't, have beliefs significantly less like those of child
abusing parents, and report actually spanking or slapping their babies less
often. They also provide a more stimulating home environment, in ways that
predict better IQ. A randomized controlled trial of the British version of our
newsletter found that it caused mothers to report fewer and less intense daily
hassles over childrearing, and to have more appropriate expectations of their
babies' behavior. http://www.uwex.edu/ces/flp/impact/documents/parentingupdate.pdf
- Parenting the 2nd & 3rd Years includes an additional 12
age-paced instructional newsletters, and is also available in both English and
Spanish. County Extension offices currently distribute it to 16,000 families per
year.
- Preparing to Parent is a 4-part series, in English and
Spanish, distributed by county Extension offices in partnership with Health
Clinics.
- Project News. You can find all 3 of the above series on the
internet at http://parenting.uwex.edu/ . A license to reproduce these pamphlets is available, and educational or health
organizations in 12 other U.S. states are already doing so. The license allows
the host organization to put their own name on the newsletters. A collaborating
project in Britain has produced and distributes a U.K. edition.
- Child Care & Early Education is the topic of Dave's
other major projects. Find out more at the web sites for the 'Early Childhood Excellence
Initiative' and the 'Wisconsin Child Care Policy
Research Partnership.
