Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology from University of Wisconsin-Platteville
  • Master’s degree in plant pathology from University of Illinois
  • Doctorate in plant pathology from University of Wisconsin-Madison

Previous Professional Experience

Tom joined UW-Extension in June 1991. In addition to his Extension work, Tom also serves as a Food Science Communicator for the Institute of Food Technologists, a professional organization with 28,000 members. From October 2000 to August 2001 Tom served as a Congressional Science Fellow with the House Committee on Agriculture in Washington, DC.

Highlights of Current Assignments and Programs

  • Providing tours and workshops for learners of all ages, with an emphasison welcoming people to the UW-Madison campus to experience science as discovery and to explore science a way of probing the unknown (http://www.biotech.wisc.edu/Education).
  • Developing new hands-on activities, puzzles and parables to develop science savvy for learners of all ages.
  • Creating materials and training on the technical and social impacts of biotechnology (http://www.biotech.wisc.edu/outreach/teachingtools.html).
  • Organizing the UW-Madison Science Alliance (http://science.wisc.edu) to synergize the wide range of science outreach programs and to improve the public's access to the science outreach resources of UW-Madison and UW-Extension.
