RE: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Implications for Professionals and Agencies satellite program
We expect that you are busy promoting the January 12, 1999 video-conference. If you haven't yet received your letter of confirmation, look for it soon in your mail box.
SITE ADDRESSES:
We've noticed that your office address is sometimes not in the same
as town as the satellite video-conference site. If that is the case, please
let us know by filling out the form at the end of this message and replying
to Susan Meier at smmeier@facstaff.wisc.edu On the web page, we'll
make sure to list the town where the program will be held so that people
can find a convenient location. This is especially important in those states
that are hosting "regional" sites. Please do this by November 20.
Remember, as people register at your site, you'll need to tell them the location of the video-conference as it may not be at your office.
STATISTICS:
We've discovered some typos in the promotional tools and are in the
process of correcting them on the web page. If you've already down-loaded
the materials, you'll need to note:
Correct:
From 1980 to 1997, the number of children living with their grandparents
rose from 2.3 million to almost 4 million. That number continues to rise.
Incorrect:
1989 to 1996, 2.4 million. (Using 1996 is not a problem but 1989 is
WRONG.)
We are promoting the satellite program at several national meetings and in several publications for the aged and their advocates including: National Council on Family Relations; American Society on Aging, and Gerontological Society of America. At NCFR and GSA we're distributing a list of state contacts and locations of registered sites (as of Nov. 14).
CEUs:
We have received formal notice from the National Council on Family
Relations and the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
that CEUs and PDUs have been granted. The proper wording for promotion
should read:
"Approved for Continuing Education Credits for the Certified Family
Life Educator program through the National Council on Family Relations"
and
"Approved for 3 PDUs from AAFCS"
Your state contact should be informing you about state CEUs.
Details on how to distribute certificates for these and other CEUs will be reviewed on the web page and during the facilitator training (via teleconference).
PARTICIPANT MATERIALS
Participant materials will be available in early to mid-December. We
realize that's later than we hoped when we set the timeline four months
ago but should give you ample time to duplicate. We are trying to keep
the number of pages to 15-20.
FACILITATOR MATERIALS:
These will be put on the web (or mailed to you) in December, prior
to your telephone conference facilitator training.
SATELLITE DOWNLINK COORDINATES:
These have not yet been assigned but will be announced at the facilitator
trainings. These will NOT be put on the website as they are only available
to sites who pay the site licensing fee as all of you have done.
That's all for now. Watch your web pages for updates.
Please e-mail us if you have any questions. Mary handles questions on site registration, web pages, and logistics. Dena is the person to talk to about program content.

RE: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Implications for Professionals and Agencies satellite program
Registrations for down-link sites for the January 12 video conference have been pouring in the past few days. However, we know that several people said they are planning on hosting a site but have not yet registered. Also, if YOU are planning on hosting a site, we need you to register (and pay your $50 license fee as well). In several states, we have no sites registered yet. Is yours one of them?
Please go into the web page (http://www.uwex.edu/ces/gprg/gprg.html) and see if the site registration in your state is accurate according to what you know. E-mail or call those persons who still need to register. Recruit sites in those geographic areas where there are gaps. Remember, registration license costs go up to $75 after December 1.
We just sent a lengthy message to all registered local site facilitators and you should have received a copy. Please note that most of the information is pertinent to you as well. We've tried to answer some of the common questions we're asked and we suspect you've been getting or will get some of the same questions.
Please keep in touch. Thank you for assisting local sites in putting on this program.

Subject: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Resources
Our list of local site facilitators for the January 12 broadcast is
growing
daily. We have discovered that some of your colleagues are just now
deciding to host a local site. While we welcome them, please remind
them
that the site registration fee goes up to $75 on December 1. We hope
your
program promotion is well under way.
We are excited to announce that American Association of Retired Persons
has
joined us as a National Sponsor.
We have four new pieces on our web site. Click on "What's New" to learn about:
1. Background information about the panelists. Some state contacts need
this information for CEU requirements.
2. Easy to follow directions for obtaining statistics on grandparents
raising grandchildren in your state or county. There is also a link
to an
excellent article from the Census Bureau on this issue.
3. An article, Grandparents Acting As Parents. The article is co-authored
by our program panelist and co-producer on the January 12 satellite
program, Dena Targ. Dena reviews current literature and research on
grandparents raising grandchildren. It is a quick read on the issue.
4. Instructions for participants requesting Continuing Education Credits
were sent via email already but look for this information on the web
also.
Thanks to those of you who sent in a update of your broadcast location
(please see email message above to access this update) - if different from
you local site facilitator's location - as requested in our
last listserve message. Please refer to it.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

RE: Participant packet materials posted on the web
Date: December 11, 1998
The participant packet is posted!! We have been working hard to
make it as
complete as possible. As of today, pages 12 (featured people
and programs
in video segments) and 18 (thank you's) are incomplete. We just completed
filming in Boston and have not been able to get all the information
regarding the programs there. We are also double checking to
make sure we
have included everyone involved with the other case studies. We will
notify
you when the two pages are updated. We apologize for an inconvenience
this
causes you but there has not been enough time to get everything done.
Please note that the cover page and page 17 (organizations and
resources-state and local) of the participant packet need to be completed
by site facilitators as they are site specific. When duplicating
the
participant packet feel free to run some of the pages back to back
and use
different colors for the various sections.
The site facilitator packet will be posted on Monday afternoon. The
satellite technical program sheet that contains the site coordinates
will
be e-mailed to registered site facilitators next week. It will
also be
mailed to all site facilitators.
Do not forget to have a copy of the participant packet and site facilitator
packet at the audio training meeting. We sent an earlier e-mail
message
identifying when site facilitators registered to participate in the
audio
training.
We hope your local promotion is going well and that individuals are
registering to participant in the program. If you have questions
about the
participant packet please e-mail them to us or call. We will try to
help you.

RE: Several items related to the satellite program
Date: December 18, 1998
We want to update you on several items related to the January 12, 1999
satellite program, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Implications
for Professionals and Agencies
1. Promotional article in American Association of Retired Persons
Bulletin- the January issue of AARP's Bulletin is promoting the
January 12th satellite program. It encourages individuals who
may be
interested in attending the program to go to the web site to find a
near by site and then to call the local site facilitator for more
information. So, you may be getting calls from grandparents.
When
you receive these calls it's important to share that the program is
designed for professionals. It focuses on programs and it would be
appropriate for grandparents who are active or who are thinking of
becoming active in their community but it does not address individual
issues.
2. We have about 260 sites with more coming in each day.
We will not
be accepting site registrations after January 1, 1999. So if
you know
of sites who aren't registered yet encourage them to get in their
registration SOON!!!
3. Please download the site participant materials EARLY so you have
time to deal with any problems. If you're having problems please
consult with someone who knows your computer system and understands
technology before calling us. Often a "computer person" can figure
out the problem faster and easier than we can. Remember that
pages 12
and 18 are not completed and should not be printed at this time.
We
will send a message when they are completed. An easy way to deal
with
them would be to duplicate the participant materials without them now
and then handout the two pages the day of the meeting.
We will have
them completed by January 1, 1999.
4. During the holiday break please bear with us as many of us are
taking some time off to be with our families. Please leave voice
mail
messages or send e-mail messages. We will get back to you as soon as
we can. We wish each of you a happy holiday season.
5. We're excited about the data base evaluation system we're using for
this program and hope that we'll have a 100% return rate of sites
inputting their evaluation data. Remember your reward of inputting
your site-specific data is to have an impact summary for your site.
The computer program will calculate your data and fill in the blanks
on the form. You will also be able to compare your site-specific
data
to the combined data from your state and national data by reviewing
a
table. You get all this by just entering your data!!
Once the
information is available we'll send out an e-mail message so you can
enter your data and see what the site-specific impact report looks
like.
Once again, Happy Holidays from both of us!
