This position is a fixed-term academic staff appointment in the University of Wisconsin-Extension's division of Cooperative Extension. The position is eligible for benefits provided to state of Wisconsin employees and is subject to UW-Extension and Cooperative Extension personnel policies.  Reappointment to this position after the initial term is dependent upon performance and availability of funding.

 Purpose and Primary Focus of Position:

The Milwaukee County Nutrition Education Program is a major effort within Cooperative Extension's Family Living Programs. The aim of Family Living Programs is to enhance the quality of family and community decisions that affect the family and to increase the families' abilities to adapt to and effect change.

 This new position has a two-fold purpose: 1) to aid and support Nutrition Educators as they plan and conduct high quality lessons that meet the needs of diverse audiences and agencies 2) to assist the Nutrition Education Program Administrator in selecting and adapting teaching materials for local use, and in evaluating the effectiveness of the educational programming provided within the Milwaukee County Nutrition Education Program.  This position will observe Nutrition Educators as they teach and will provide coaching and feedback to build on the strengths of the Nutrition Educators.  The Teaching Coordinator will also provide nutrition education programming, as needed.

 Primary Duties/Essential Job Functions:

• Assist the Milwaukee County Nutrition Education Program (WNEP) Administrator in recruiting, training and supporting Nutrition Education Program staff members
• Assist in identifying community sites for program delivery
• In conjunction with the WNEP Administrator and WNEP Nutrition Educators, contribute to an effective outreach effort that ensures equitable access to programs and facilities
• Promote the Milwaukee County Nutrition Education Program with designated community agencies and maintain a positive working relationship with these agencies; follow-up on agency referrals for educational activities
• Participate in Nutrition Education Program training opportunities
• Work with state specialists, the Milwaukee County WNEP Administrator, and Nutrition Educators to locate and adapt appropriate research based educational materials and evaluation strategies
• Assist the WNEP Administrator in providing support for teaching activities of the Nutrition Educators and in evaluating the WNEP project
• Develop and maintain an effective system for organizing and using teaching resources
• Serve as the team leader for scheduling nutrition education events and Nutrition Educators' assignments; arrange substitute coverage as needed in the absence of the Administrator
• Track follow-up on referrals to WNEP by Nutrition Educators from initial attempts to contact through enrollment to graduation
• On an as needed basis, teach culturally relevant educational programs for adults and youth through "learn while you wait", small group and/or home visits including nutrition for families, handling food safely, food buying and selection, and managing the food budget

 Other Required Duties and Responsibilities:

• Recruit and enroll program participants
• Maintain and punctually submit accurate records of time use, travel expenses and essential or relevant program information, e.g., participation numbers, evaluation information, etc.
• Maintain a program of professional development/improvement in priority subject matter and educational delivery methods
• Identify and involve volunteers and assist in their recognition
• Cooperate with other Extension personnel to develop strong, integrated Extension programs
• Encourage program participants to participate in other Extension programs
• Regularly participate in meetings and events held at sites throughout the geographic area served, including occasional evening and weekend work
• Make individual arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions
• Assume weekly travel throughout the county and occasional travel within the district and state
• Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

 Administrative Relationships:

The position is supervised by and accountable to the Milwaukee County Nutrition Education Program Administrator in consultation with the Milwaukee County Extension Director. The position is officially accountable to UW-Extension through the Milwaukee County Extension Director on all matters related to (a) program performance and job responsibilities, (b) developing effective external working relationships with clientele groups, other agencies, departments and organizations, (c) continuing professional development, (d) matters related to vacation, leave of absence, salary promotion, etc., and (e) reporting and evaluating programs to county, state and federal government as appropriate.

 Program Relationships:

This position primarily works with the Family Living program area of Cooperative Extension. Appropriate programming relationships with other program areas are encouraged.

 The position seeks counsel from appropriate Extension statewide programming units regarding subject matter and educational strategies related to carrying out the purpose of this position. The position seeks counsel from appropriate county advisory groups to determine appropriate subject matter and educational strategies needed to meet current and long-term educational needs in the county related to the purpose of the Milwaukee County Nutrition Education Program.

Qualifications: 

      To be considered eligible for this position, applicants must meet all of the following minimum qualifications:

• Demonstrated skill in planning, implementing or teaching non-formal educational programs with adults or youth
• Demonstrated ability to initiate, form and effectively maintain working relationships with persons or associates from cultures other than one's own
• Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, databases and the Internet
• Bachelor's degree in dietetics, nutritional sciences, family and consumer sciences, social work, education or related field

 Additional knowledge, skills and abilities desired:

• Previous experience in coaching and mentoring others to improve job performance
• Strong group leadership skills
• Previous experience working in partnership with community-based agencies and organizations
• Volunteer or work experience with economically-challenged individuals, families and communities
• Volunteer or work experience related to food and nutrition education
• Ability to teach and present ideas effectively orally, in writing and through educational technology
• Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills in a team setting; ability to effectively manage conflicts
• Ability to organize work and to work productively without direct supervision in a highly visible public environment
• Residence in geographic area served
