Michigan State University Extension Experiential Learning Program in Mexico
The Mexican population in Wisconsin continues to dramatically increase
and agriculture producers and agribusinesses in all sectors are finding
that hiring Mexican employees is an effective response to their workforce
needs. As we look to the surrounding states of Minnesota, Michigan
and Iowa, we can see that these trends are likely to continue into
the future. Extension professionals must take every opportunity to
build their capacity to work effectively with Mexicans and help communities
welcome them. The Michigan State University (MSU) Extension program
is an excellent professional development opportunity for our colleagues.
In
2007, seven Cooperative Extension colleagues participated in this
study tour coordinated by Michigan State University Extension. Testimonials
reported that the experience broadened the horizons of participants
and expanded their knowledge and understanding of the Mexican culture
of Wisconsin Extension clientele and informed them about the issues
of immigration faced by individuals and communities in our state.
