September 17, 2007

Hi there! I come to UWEX's Basin Educator program with 15 years of watershed-based experience in northern Wisconsin as County Conservationist in Price, Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, & Iron counties.  I’m a graduate of Northland College in Ashland, with a degree in Earth Science/Geology.  My soil & water conservation background working with landowners, developing education programming, and focusing on watershed protection has helped me develop many effective partnerships in the region to build upon.

In my new role, I hope to help interested landowners and communities protect natural resources by becoming more aware of the relationships within watersheds, exploring connections between developed, managed, and natural communities.  I also hope to encourage individuals and communities to consider their collective impacts on the overall environment, including climate change considerations, sustainable local economies, and personal action.

I enjoy rock hunting, pets, paddling and photography, music & dance, travel, scuba, and hunting & fishing.  I’m originally from New York State’s Finger Lakes region and I live in Gurney (WI) on scenic Hwy 169 near Lake Superior.

Title:  4-H Secretary - Oneida County
Start Date:  July 9, 2007

My name is Ginger Terzinski and I am the new 4-H Secretary in the UW-Extension Office.  I worked for the School District of Rhinelander for many years, but three years ago, during the budget cuts, I ventured off to create and operate a daycare specifically set up for teachers.

I wanted teachers to have child care options to match their diverse schedules and summer vacations.  This was a fabulous experience and had many positive outcomes; however, it lacked the adult people contact I so much needed.  I am excited to be back in an office setting and look forward to meeting many new people.

Over the next year, I have several goals. One of my goals as the 4-H secretary is to continue to keep the positive line of communication open between the 4-H office and all the people who work with the 4-H programs.  In addition, it is my goal to get better acquainted with our 4-H youth, their parents, volunteers and 4-H leaders.

Another goal of mine is to develop and manage an efficient and productive office.  I have started to organize my office in a familiar manner and am learning the Blue Ribbon system for the Oneida County Fair.

I hope to bring more sunshine and happiness to the 4-H program so our youth can have more positive opportunities to learn new skills, gain self-confidence and successfully contribute to their communities.  I am excited every day I come to the office because I know new adventures are anxiously waiting for me.  You can find out a bit more about me and my family on the 4-H page of the Oneida County website at http://oneida.uwex.edu.

Please stop by and visit me and all of the staff at the office. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have about our programs.  See you in the 4-H newsletter.

Title: Community, Natural Resource and Economic Development Educator - Ashland County
Start Date: February 21, 2007

Tom works with local governments, non-profit organizations and citizens on a variety of issues related to community development.  Community leadership development, sustainability and energy issues are areas of current emphasis.  Prior to UW Extension he served as project manager/grant writer for the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Northern Wisconsin.  He oversaw a sustainable design process for three community facilities, an assessment project for commercial scale wind power development and energy efficiency projects.  He wrote numerous successful funding proposals for these projects.  He previously worked for 16 years at Northland College as director of Student Development and auxiliary services, and served as an adjunct instructor of leadership and sustainability.  Tom earned an Ed. D. in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas in 2005.  He is active in local efforts to implement an eco-municipality initiative and promoting sustainable agriculture and in regional efforts to green higher education.  He is one of those rare folks who heads “down south” to the cabin for a little R&R.

Title: Family Living Educator - Calumet County
Start Date: May 1, 2007

My past work experience includes management of a child care center, as a nutrition educator with WNEP, a children’s specialist at a domestic violence center, director of an education and technology center in a subsidized housing complex – provided on-site programming for the families, and director of career services at a liberal arts college.  What would all of these positions have in common you ask?  All of these positions required curriculum development, program development and teaching.

I received my undergraduate degree from UW-Green Bay and my master’s degree from Silver Lake College.

I am a fanatic about my Irish heritage and have been since I was a child.  My dream was to always travel to Ireland. When I graduated with my bachelor’s degree, I went there as a graduation gift to myself.  I have been back there twice since then with my family.  Being with family and friends is my favorite pastime but music, gardening, watching HGTV, reading, biking, jet skiing, and cooking are also a lot of fun.

One thing that you could not tell by looking at me is that I like offbeat things like old movies (my favorite movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life”), indie movies and Thai food.
