Ellen hails
from a small farm west of Berthold in northwest North Dakota. She
holds a B.S. in home economics education from North Dakota State
University and a M.A. in human development and family studies from
the University of Missouri-Columbia. She worked for the NDSU Extension
Service from 1985-1991 as extension home economist in Ward County
and from 1991-92 as area family systems specialist in eight counties
in the southwest corner of the state. From there, she went on developmental
leave to go to graduate school in Missouri. While at MU, the NDSU
Extension Service went through a downsizing and she was cut from
her job in ND. So, she went off to Wisconsin to work for the UW-Extension
Service from 1995 until 1998 when she was able to come back "home"
to work for the NDSU/Barnes County Extension Service. On a side
note, she is glad to be back on the prairie - Wisconsin and Missouri
had waaaaaaay too many trees! Family is very important to her, both
personally and professionally. Though she is not married, she works
at staying connected to her godson and her extended family, including
many in Norway (yes, she has been there three times). Family goes
hand in hand with genealogy and she enjoys exploring her Norsk/Viking
roots. Other interests include furniture refinishing, reading (especially
regional literature), and traveling. Extension programming revolves
around parent education, asset building, resource management and
intergenerational relationships.
