As an Extension Educator for Family Consumer Sciences (FCS), I am one of three FCS educators serving a six-county area in east central South Dakota. My bachelor's degree is in dairy production / dairy manufacturing from SDSU in 1992 and I served as a district manager for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) from 1992 - 1996. During my time with the DHIA, I became very aware of the relationship struggles that plagued many of the farm families I worked with, including parent vs. child, parent in-law vs. child in-law, and sibling vs. sibling conflicts. My interest in these relationship issues was one factor that led me to attain additional coursework in family consumer sciences. I currently am pursuing a master's degree in Human Development, Child and Family Studies from SDSU. My mixed educational and career background has given me the interest and tools to develop programs related to farm family communication and farm family estate planning. In addition, I focus my programming efforts on personal and family financial education. My personal time is spent keeping up with my two young sons, age 3 and 8.
