Meet Our Staff
Cathy Techtmann -- Department Head
Cathy holds the rank of Professor, Department of Community Resource Development, University of Wisconsin-Extension. Since 1998, she has provided administrative leadership to establish a new “experimental” Extension Office at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. She has provided leadership in creating freshwater estuary, leadership development, and sustainability education programs for both local audiences and regional visitors, including innovative on-the-water “ed-ventures” using a 34-foot voyager canoe and kayaks. Her work has contributed to the initiative to establish a Lake Superior Freshwater Estuary Center (LS-FEC) to further estuary research, education, and outreach. Cathy is currently serving as Coordinator for the LS-FEC Public Involvement Team which could include designation of a National Estuarine Research Reverse on Wisconsin’s Lake Superior shore.
Cathy received her Masters of Science Degree- Natural Resource Management, Environmental Interpretation Emphasis and a Secondary Teaching Certification in Biology. She has experience in community economic development, public involvement, marketing, and tourism development. She is a graduate of the Wisconsin Rural Leadership Program and served as the Iron County UW-Extension Community Natural Resource Economic Development Agent from 1983-1998.

Nancy Larson - Lake Superior Basin Educator
Nancy joined the Basin Educator program in 2006 after seventeen years with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. She served as the DNR Lake Superior Program Coordinator for twelve years. Nancy’s specialties are Great Lakes issues, watershed health, and toxins in the environment. Nancy has worked with the Lake Superior Partner Team since their formation and continues to help the group pursue a watershed health initiative for the Lake Superior basin in Wisconsin. Nancy has also worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She holds a B.S. in biology from St. Olaf College and a M.S. in biology from the University of Minnesota.

Becky Sapper joins our staff as the Lake Superior Freshwater Estuary Outreach Coordinator. She is working on the effort to establish a Lake Superior Freshwater Estuary Center on Wisconsin shores of Lake Superior. An instrumental part of a Freshwater Estuary Center will be the designation of a National Estuarine Research Reserve. For this effort, Becky is facilitating the Site Selection Technical Team and assisting with the Public Involvement Team.
Becky comes to our office after 10 years of employment with The Nature Conservancy where she was involved with stewardship, land protection and education efforts in northern Wisconsin. Becky attended Northland College and UW-Stevens Point where she received her Bachelor of Science with a dual major in Biology and Wildlife Management. Becky and her husband enjoy casting a line in the lake with their two children.
