Pathfinders
The Lake Superior Pathfinders Program began
in 2000 as an idea for a Lake Superior leadership school for high
school students through the UW-Extension Office at the Northern Great
Lakes Visitor Center. It became the basis for a unique on-the-water
leadership program that emphasized learning about Lake Superior issues
while building personal leadership skills by learning how to recognize,
respect, and effectively work with people of different leadership
styles.
In 2004, a WCM supported a feasibility study
to expand the a curriculum for a Lake Superior leadership program
based on the Wisconsin Rural Leadership model creating the Lake Superior
Pathfinders Program. The curriculum focused Pathfinders on
providing experiential learning to explore the issues affecting the
sustainability of Lake Superior, with special emphasis on personal
leadership development and service learning. The Pathfinders program
became a partnership between UW-Extension and Northland College as
a 5-day summer residential program.
In 2007, the Northern Great Lakes Visitor
Center UW-Extension Office offered the Pathfinders program to Northland
College where it is currently managed. The program has expanded to
include environmental leadership and social justice.
