FRANKLIN COVEY™ SELF LEADERSHIP TRAINING - Success Story

by Nan A. Baumgartner

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective PeopleSituation:
Cooperative Extension "engages people and their communities in positive change." We do this through research-based education and working to strengthen family, organization, and community relationships. In order to build strong relationships with the people we serve, we must model positive and productive relationships within our offices, districts and program areas.

Professional development that builds on this need for respectful, productive and effective relationships can be found in a variety of programs, one of which is the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People". This 28-hour program, offered to UW-Extension faculty/staff since 1999, provides an in-depth look at personal and professional effectiveness in relationships. It provides hands on skills to improve effectiveness at personal, interpersonal, managerial and organizational levels. In short, it helps Extension staff improve how they relate, engage and work with others at all levels of their jobs. In the words of past participants, "it is a life-changing experience."

Outputs:
Since the summer of 1999, 4-day training workshops have been conducted, reaching 81 UW-Extension faculty and staff. All of the sessions were co-facilitated by Larry Jones and Nan Baumgartner. In April 2001, a 7-question follow-up survey was sent via email and surface mail to gather information about the impact the training has had, if any, on participants. Forty-nine (60%) of the 81 participants responded.

Results:
Ninety-eight percent of the respondents stated they are using one or more ideas from the training, on a regular basis. The most common ideas being used were 1) 25% have developed mission statements; 2) 20% use the time management matrix regularly; and tied for third at 11% each, participants are using the concepts of "circle of influence/circle of concern" and "emotional bank account deposits." Forty-eight respondents (98%) identified changes they have made as a result of the 7 Habits workshops.
