Copyright permission
Which items require
copyright permission?
Most text,
figures, artwork, graphs, and photographs originally created or
published by someone else need permission. This includes any work
done on your publication by anyone not employed by UW-Extension
Cooperative Extension, such as a freelancer. You should assume that
work from other state government publicationsincluding those
of other Cooperative Extension Servicesrequires permission.
For tables,
permission is required to publish someone else's published or unpublished
data. A table of data directly from a single source and not altered
requires permission.
"Cant I just
cite the sources?"
It is important
to distinguish permission from citing the source. Authors must cite
the source for everythingfor example, graphics, quotations,
tables, and figuresthat they do not create. Failure to cite
a source is considered plagiarism. Even tables or figures that do
not need a permission need a source if they are not the author's
own work.
We cannot publish
a figure, table, artwork, or portion of any work that needs a permission
until we have on file a copy of that permission. Your editor can supply
a sample permissions
request letter.
