CNMP Training - Wisconsin

training WisconsinThis Comprehensive Nutrient Management Planning Curriculum was developed by University of Wisconsin-Extension, partner conservation agencies and private sector consultants as a component of the CSREES Great Lakes Regional Water Quality Leadership Team Conservation Education Program.

Comprehensive Nutrient Management Planning (CNMP) is more than just a 590 nutrient management plan. By closely examining the entire livestock production system a planner can identify current and potential problems resulting in a reduced potential for pollution.

There are three options for CNMP training—Agronomic, Engineering, and Feed Management. Register only for the option you are qualified for. To register for a program, select the check box next to the listing. For some offerings, you will need to register directly with the group offering the training. In that case, follow the link provided.

Agronomic Option

TrainingPre-Requisites:

  • CCA or equivalent (may take the CNMP Planning Course if you will be taking the next available CCA exam)
  • Managing Nutrients in Wisconsin Soils course or equivalent*
  • Training for Nutrient Management Planners or equivalent*
  • A working understanding of RUSLE 2 soil erosion prediction model
  • NRCS certification as a conservation planner or, base the Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan on a resource assessment and conservation plan approved by a NRCS Certified Conservation Planner.

* CNMP planners who can demonstrate a minimum of 3 years experience developing nutrient management plans utilizing animal waste as a nutrient source according to the NRCS 590 Nutrient Management Standard may be waived from this training requirement. Nutrient Management training information.

Engineering Option

TrainingPre-requisites:

  • Valid registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin and declared expertise using NRCS practice technical standards to design, conduct construction inspection and certification for the practices listed below

or

  • NRCS Engineering Job Approval/DATCP Certification for design and construction of the practices
    listed below:
    • Waste Storage Facility (313)
    • Sediment Basin (350)
    • Wastewater Treatment Strip (635)
    • Manure Transfer (634)
    • Heavy Use Area Protection (561)

Online Courses for Engineering Option only:

1 Ag Waste Management Systems A Primer may be waived for candidates who can demonstrate a minimum of three years experience siting, designing, and conducting quality assurance during construction of animal waste storage systems.

2 Ag Waste Management Systems Level II may be waived for candidates who; can demonstrate 5 years experience siting, designing, providing quality assurance during construction, and certification of waste management practices and who score an 80% or higher on the course pre-test.

Courses

Understanding regulations that affect CNMPs (June 17, 2008 Madison)
REQUIRED COURSE for Agronomic and Engineering certifications

A one-day session that examines not only the federal and state regulations (EPA CAFO, DNR,
Dept of Ag), but also local issues (zoning, conditional use permits, county livestock and manure
storage ordinances) that affect livestock facilities. Registration Fee: $75

Advanced CNMP Walkover Assessment (April 8, 2008 Juneau, WI)

This one day classroom/field course will provide participants with advanced knowledge in identifying issues that need to be addressed during a CNMP walkover. Topics covered include: Whole Farm Resource Concerns, New Engineering Evaluation Tools, Clean Water Exclusion, Animal Lots - Runoff Concerns, Milkhouse Waste, Manure Storage and Feed Storage - Ronnie Williams. The morning session will be followed by a farm walkover to put the morning lessons into practice. Fee: $45. Lunch included.

An in-depth look at the technical standards that are used in CNMP development including, but
not limited to: 590, manure storage (313), bunker silo leachate control. Registration fee: $75

Site Assessment for CNMP/SNAP PLUS-PI (August 12-13, 2008 Green Bay, WI)
REQUIRED COURSE for Agronomic.
OPTIONAL for Engineering Certification

A two-day hands-on session designed to take all information learned in the previous classes and create a CNMP on a real farm. Includes Phosphorus Index and SNAP training, spill response training. Registration fee: $75

CNMP Update - Web Course - limited to first 100 registrations  (March 19, 2008, 9-11 am)

A two hour web and phone based update on CNMP planning, tools and requirements. Internet access and phone connection required, high speed internet highly recommended. Registration Fee: The cost for this session is $30 for the first person at each site, and $10 for each additional attendee at the same site.
