Hillside erosionConservation Planning Training - Wisconsin

WisconsinThis conservation training curriculum was developed by University of Wisconsin-Extension, University of Minnesota Extension, partner conservation agencies and private sector consultants as a component of the CSREES Great Lakes Regional Water Quality Leadership Team Conservation Education Program.

Conservation Planning is the integral "first step" that all crop and non-cropland conservation decisions are built upon. True conservation planning involves not only a working knowledge of the science behind the resource and potential management solutions, but an understanding of the cultural, social and economic factors that influence a landowner's decisions.

A farm's conservation plan is the base document from which all other land management options should start. Whether the farmer is considering a switching to rotational grazing, implementing a pest management plan or expanding their livestock operation, a poor or non-existent conservation plan can mean the difference between success or failure.

This training program has several components that are targeted at specific audiences, based on experience and needs. The fees for the 2006 series are $50/day (with the exception of Rusle 2 training).

  • Core Conservation Training for agency staff (with less than 2 years experience)
  • Conservation Planning Training for agency staff (with 3-5 years experience)
  • CCA/TSP Training for private sector consultants producing Conservation Plans

The focus of this 3 day orientation session is to teach new SWCD employees the basis of conservation planning – how to interact with both traditional and non-traditional producers, understanding components of livestock and cash grain production systems and the basics of tillage equipment.

Core Conservation 2 : December 10-12, Stevens Point. Fee is $75/day
This three day session focuses on the electronic tools necessary for conservation planning – RUSLE 2, GIS applications, basic agronomy of Wisconsin crops, and alternative ag enterprises (grazing).

Core Conservation 3 : February 5-7, 2008 Madison Fee is $75/day
The final core session focuses on the best management practices available, how they fit with ag and non-ag systems, and protecting cultural resources when modifying the landscape.

CCA/TSP Training takes the essentials from the core courses and provides TSPs/CCAs a solid basis to integrate their existing knowledge with the basic field/technical skills required of conservation planners. CCAs/TSPs who complete the above 1½ days then join agency staff for the Conservation Planning Training.

Understanding RUSLE 2 Soil Loss Model (February 20, 2008, Hancock)

Introduction to Conservation Planning for TSPs/CCAs: March 10, 2008 Platteville, Fee is $75/day
A full-day, in the field session that introduces private sector consultants to shooting slopes, residue management, conservation options, understanding agency technical standards and cultural/heritage resources.

Conservation Planning Training - Conservation Planning Training is a four-session series providing a research-based approach to whole-farm conservation planning. By focusing on the entire ecosystem scale (from watershed down to parts of a particular field), this training series provides a hands on approach to conservation plan development, evaluation, and landowner education.

These sessions are for agency staff with 3-5 years experience, agency staff who have completed Core Conservation, and TSPs/CCAs who have completed the CCA/TSP training sessions. Course fees are $75/day.

Conservation Planning 1: March 11-12, 1008
