Shoreland Restoration

How to restore your shoreline

Task 5 - Choosing plants for Northern Wisconsin
Dry to Dry Mesic Upland Sites Plant List

Dry, sandy soils and often a southern exposure characterize this type of site. This page contains lists of plants native to northern Wisconsin and suitable for the upland dry to dry mesic forest areas. While many prairie species would no doubt grow on these dry, sandy sites, such species are not appropriate for shoreland restoration in the forested ecosystems of northern Wisconsin. If you insist on planting prairie species, please plan on replacing them with appropriate forest species after a couple of years, when your trees and shrubs become established.

Some of the plants in this list are linked to the Wisconsin State Herbarium website where you can get detailed information on these  plants.  Just click on the plant name to be taken to the herbarium site.
