How to restore your shoreline

Task 1 - Know your shoreland regulations

Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter NR 115 defines standards for the management of land along Wisconsin lakes and rivers not located within incorporated municipalities. County and town shoreland zoning ordinances can be more restrictive than State ordinances in setting standards for the management of land in shoreland areas. A visit to your local County Zoning Office is an important starting point for acquiring current ordinance guidelines. Some counties have their ordinances on the world wide web (see our local shoreland ordinances page). Understanding ordinances that apply to your shoreland will guide you in planning your restoration project.  Your county’s University of Wisconsin Extension Office can also support your effort with bulletins that list native plant nurseries and seed sources, restoration consultants, and sources for copies of well-illustrated publications about shoreland plants and landscaping.

It is important to avoid planting non-native invasive plant species in your shoreland. If you find any of these species on your shoreland, you should pull them out and either burn them or bag them for the landfill.
