Training for Master Gardeners in Western Wisconsin
General Master Gardener Training
Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who aid University of Wisconsin – Cooperative
Extension staff by helping people in the community better understand
horticulture and their environment.
In General Master Gardener Training, you receive 36 hours of horticulture
training. In exchange, you must perform 24 hours of volunteer service
in your community, in activities related to horticulture, within
a year of completing the class. The course fee includes instructional
materials, reference materials, and covers speaker and room fees.
To become re-certified as a Wisconsin Master Gardener each year
thereafter, you must complete 24 hours of volunteer service and 10
hours of continuing education.
Any adult over 18 can participate in the Master Gardener program.
No previous experience or training is necessary.
Advanced Training for Master Gardeners
To become re-certified, Master Gardeners are required to participate
in 10 hours of continuing education each year. While classes from
a variety of sources can fulfill this requirement, Specialized Master
Gardener classes are offered each year in selected counties throughout
Wisconsin.
Each year the specialized training program focuses on one of three
major subject areas: vegetables and fruits; flowers and houseplants;
and landscape plants and lawns.
Specialized training is typically offered in late winter/spring
in selected counties across the state. For more information, contact
your local horticulture agent.
