Discuss the vacancy with your District Director, State Coordinator and local colleagues

Your first action should be to talk to your District Director and the State WNEP Coordinator.

You'll need to discuss:

  • Approval to fill the position from the District Director and WNEP Office.
  • Confirmation of starting salary.
  • Confirmation of funding and account numbers for the position.
  • Determination of the percentage of the appointment if it is less than full time.
  • Additional ability requirements to be listed on the position description

Discuss the position vacancy with your Department Head(s) and other county colleagues.

  • Who would be the best person to fit into your office or WNEP team? That question doesn't have a simple or easy answer.
  • As you think about hiring a new team member, talk with others in your unit or team about your needs and ideas. This is a good chance for you to discuss current plans and future needs. Start by reviewing the past: How successful has your program been? What kind of people helped make it work and how did they do it? What skills and knowledge are missing on the team?
  • What do you want your program to look like in the next three to five years? Ten years? What educational programs will you be offering? What skills and knowledge will staff need in order to be successful? Looking at the "big picture" will give you a better idea how to start building your team today to meet tomorrow's goal.
