Develop a recruitment plan

A complete recruitment plan is one of the items you'll need to submit to the WNEP Office for official University approval. A recruitment plan includes a well thought-out list of locations and media you will use to advertise your position opening. You will need to include names, addresses and other contact/descriptive information for each item in your list.

Be creative with your recruiting plan. Newspaper ads are not the only way to reach potential candidates. In fact, depending on your community, there may be more effective - and less expensive - ways to find your target audience.

Who are the community agencies you deal with on a daily or weekly basis? Do they have bulletin boards where you can post a job opening? Does the Director or staff of the agency hold meetings where an announcement of the opening can be made or distributed? Can you get a mention in their newsletter?

Are there churches that serve the audience you want to reach? Do they have any means of communication you can use to let the community know you are looking for help?

Schools in your county usually have a placement office where you can send notices. Another contact is the local office of the State Job Service.

Organizations dedicated to persons of color or heritage such as the NAACP, the Urban League or Tribal Councils, may be helpful to you in promoting your opening.

Do any radio or television stations in your area list job openings at no charge? Community access TV usually has a segment that provides information on available jobs. Consult your local yellow pages for a listing of stations to contact.

If you are seeking a person with a specific language background such as Spanish, Hmong or Lao, look for groups that use that language. Is there a Spanish radio station in the county? A Hmong paper? A school that teaches English as a second language?

Need help?

You may find it helpful to adapt the template "Letter to Community Requesting Help in Hiring" and mail it to persons and agencies in your community.

The Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity Programs can provide you several resources:

  • The Recruitment Database (http://www.uwex.edu/diversity/resources/recruit.cfm) contains over 1000 listings of minority and/or female individuals, organizations and institution of higher education. These listings may be sorted by specific criteria/geographic regions to reduce the amount of labels needed or to target contacts.

  • There are links (http://www.uwex.edu/diversity/links/) to many other resources and internet sites that can help you with your recruitment efforts.
