Group IX
Natural Resources Seminar
Group IX participants gathered for their final seminar at Kemp Station
in Woodruff July 9-12, 2002. Seminar Co-Chairs were Al Anderson,
Professor, UW Extension, Center for Economic Development, and Dave
Marcouiller, Professor, Department of Urban and Regional Planning,
UW-Madison.
The group explored ecosystem management from political, scientific,
and societal aspects. They examined the impact of human intervention
on forest and water resources to maximize public and private benefits
while ameliorating negative effects. Ecological aspects involved
limnology (study of lakes) and silviculture (ecology of forest stands)
with associated impacts on wildlife/fisheries habitat enhancement,
water quality, forest genetics, and biodiversity. Socio-political
aspects included public perceptions, development implications, global
influences, and social constructs of property rights. Group IX participants
also delved into issues associated with Native American treaty rights.
