Group X (2002 - 2004)
Environmental Issues, July 13-16, 2004
Group X’s final seminar, Environment Issues, was held at Kemp
Station in Woodruff, July 13-16, 2004. This was chaired by Dave Marcouiller,
Professor, UW-Madison, Department of Urban and Regional Planning
and Mark Rickenbach, Professor, UW-Madison, Department of Forest
Ecology and Management. Additional members of the planning committee
included Stan Gruszynski, Director, and Rhonda Ambuehl, Outreach
Specialist, both from the Rural Leadership and Community Development
Program, Global Environmental Management Education Center, UW-Stevens
Point. In addition, five graduate students from UW-Stevens Point
attended this seminar as part of a leadership mentoring experience.
The seminar began with a journey to the North Highlands American
Legion State Forest where participants met with Susan Brisk, Wisconsin
State Forester. They looked at current logging operations and visited
a clear-cut site and discussed the ecological basis for forest management
and timber harvesting, economic development and the changing logging
sector, landscape perspectives in forest management, and public accountability
on public and private lands. The afternoon was spent with representatives
from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. They covered
such topics as forest-based recreation, tourism, and nonmarketed
amenities. A trip to a nearyby mill gave the group an opportunity
to examine issues associated with wood products. Lively discussions
continued about the impact of leadership on environmental issues,
led by Stan Gruszynski.
Several representatives from the UW Trout Lake Station informed
the group about water and lake issues, specifically, plankton work,
macrophytes and invasives, lakefront issues, mercury sampling, and
the importance of a woody habitat.
The seminar continued with a tour of the Lac du Flambeau Fish Hatchery
and discussion with tribal members about the transitioning of tribes
in Wisconsin today. Later on, the group enjoyed a tour of a traditional
Indian village at Waswagoning.
