Group X (2002 - 2004)
Global Economics Seminar, November 11-14, 2003
Janesville and Chicago were the locations for Group X’s seminar
to explore Global Economics, November 11-14. Thanks to Seminar Chairs:
Gary Kirking, Regional Manager, Western Wisconsin Technical College,
WRLP Alumni, Group V; Bill Pinkovitz, Associate Professor, Center
for Community Economic Development, UW Extension; and Mark Brodziski,
Program Director of Business and Community Programs, USDA Rural Development,
WRLP Alumni, Group IX.
Participants began their seminar by hearing presentations that discussed
the benefits as well as the pitfalls of a global economy and its
impact on the people and businesses of Wisconsin. Don Nichols, Director
of the La Follette School and Professor of Economics and Public Affairs,
UW-Madison shared the strengths of the global economy and Steve Watrous,
of the Wisconsin Fair Trade Campaign shared some of the pitfalls.
Participants visited several businesses that do international business
both before the seminar and during the seminar. Then participants
boarded a bus and headed for Chicago with visits to the Chicago Mercantile,
the Federal Reserve, and the US Export/ Import Bank. These visits
enabled participants to discuss the ‘Impact of the Global Economy
in the Midwest.’
On Thursday evening, back in Janesville, participants and area alumni
listened to Roger Axtell, UW Regent and former Vice President of
Parker Pen, describe his experiences conducting international business.
Friday participants engaged in discussions of several ethical issues
surrounding the global economy. The seminar closed with a presentation
on the scale and impact of International Trade in Wisconsin by Rod
Nilsestuen, Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer
Protection.
Group X, Service Project – ECHO, Everyone Cooperating to
Help Others
In recent years, participants have participated in a service project
to benefit one of the communities in which an instate seminar was
held. Group X spent an afternoon at ECHO - Everyone Cooperating to
Help Others after the Global Economics seminar in Janesville. Echo
is a non-profit charity organization serving low-income families
in the Janesville area. Some participants unloaded a truckload of
canned vegetables while others applied labels to the cans. A small
group prepared the boxes that would be filled with food for families
in need and others assisted with a newsletter and annual fund drive
mailing. WRLP’s work helped ECHO prepare for the 850 Thanksgiving
Day food baskets that would be distributed in the Janesville area.
