Group XI (2004-2006) News
Leadership Seminar, September 14-17, 2004
by Michael Berg, Group XI participant
As a writer for the seminar at Treehaven in Tomahawk, it was quite
a week. On Tuesday we were introduced to Bill Rizzo and Dan Hill,
seminar co-chairs. Bill Rizzo is a community resource development
educator with Dane County Extension; Dan is a local government specialist
with the Local Government Center, UW-Extension, Madison. Mr. Rizzo
worked with us to develop a personal leadership philosophy emphasizing
that ours all may be very different. Mr. Hill invited us to share
our reflections on the essence of leadership.
Most of Wednesday was spent with Kirsten Norslien, owner of Roots,
and Wings Coaching. I found the experiences we engaged in to have
one common ingredient-- Teamwork! On Wednesday evening we heard from
Paul Dietmann, Sauk County Ag Agent for UW-Extension and Group IV
alumni. He shared his personal leadership story. A few of the things
I took away from his leadership story are:
- One person cannot do much by himself or herself even if they
hold an office.
- Learn to disagree without being disagreeable.
- Pick your battles carefully, and
- Do not gloat over victory.
A highlight for me during the seminar was our exploration of personality
styles and comparing it to our leadership philosophy. I not only
enjoyed finding out more about my own personality style but I learned
more about how I relate to others as well – whether it is orange,
blue, green, or gold.
On Thursday, JoAnn Stormer invited us to reflect on the role of
ethics in Leadership. We examined several case scenarios in small
groups and pondered our personal values together. I believe it is
very important for a leader to be honest at all times, and to have
the highest ethics possible.
