Impact Report, June 28, 2002
Excerpt: In July 2001, the Cross Divisional Digital Asset Management Working Group was formed to investigate the uses and value of Digital Asset Management technologies within UW-Extension. The team came to understand that the reality of building the DAM infrastructure at UWEX would mean coordinating one system with a series of individual activities, all serving different purposes. For a successful DAM model to be integrated both within UWEX and the broader context of the UW and beyond, challenges in content management, identification of learning objects and the metatagging of learning objects needed to be addressed.

The long-range ramifications and applications of this digital
content repository are powerful. Once cataloged, UW-Extension
content (everything we as an institution produce and wish to make
accessible) can be stored as learning objects in searchable databases.
The learning objects can be retrieved for use in traditional services
(such as printing a document), and more importantly, learning
objects can easily be associated in new ways. This will create
unprecedented flexibility in instructional design. Courses, training,
and services can be customized and personalized for specific situations
and learners, by using a common body of information, all available
at the click of a mouse, via the Web or datacast over Wisconsin
Public Television and Radio.

It is anticipated that approximately $200,000 will be available for this effort in FY 2002-03. This money will support grants that range in purpose from underwriting idea exploration that often provides the foundation for innovative programs across divisions to those intended to move from a sound concept into a program.
