| Abstract | Distance learning programs, whether in higher education or corporate training, have alarmingly high drop out rates. While many industry experts have pointed to the effectiveness of mentors, how mentors are used must be closely analyzed. Mentors are most effective when their role is properly structured and they are effectively trained to maximize the students’ learning experience. In this presentation we will present a successful mentoring model that consists of five components: Advisement, Application, Accountability, Alignment, and Affiliation. We will also share case studies from both higher education and corporate training that illustrate how these components lead to low attrition and high completion rates for distance learners. |
